Long-distance birthday ideas: 9 ways to feel close
The birthday is coming and you are hundreds of miles apart. Maybe because of work, university, or because your families live in different countries.
You are far from alone. According to Germany's Federal Institute for Population Research, one in eight people aged 18 to 49 in Germany lived in a committed relationship with separate homes in 2021. Among 18 to 24 year olds it was almost one in three. Just under a third of these couples live more than an hour apart.
The good news: distance doesn't have to mean feeling distant. In a diary study of US student couples by Crystal Jiang and Jeffrey Hancock, partners in long-distance relationships even reported more intimacy than couples living close by. One reason: they opened up more and made a bigger effort to show affection.
Here are nine ideas to do just that.
1. Be the first message of the day
At midnight, when the birthday begins. But in the birthday person's time zone, not yours. If you live in different time zones, read our guide on birthday wishes across time zones first.
2. Send your voice
A voice message sounds like you. Research on conversations shows that a familiar voice connects more strongly than written words. More on this, plus recording tips: Birthday voice message.
3. Plan a video dinner
Cook the same dish, each in your own kitchen. Or order something similar and eat together on camera. It feels much more like a date than a normal call.
4. Collect wishes from friends
Ask friends in advance for short videos or messages. Edit them together or send them all in the morning. They'll feel how many people are thinking of them.
5. Hide little surprises throughout the day
A message at breakfast, a photo at lunch, a song in the evening. Plan the times in advance so nothing gets lost in a busy day.
6. Give each other a shared future
A ticket for your next visit, a concert you'll see together, or a weekend in a city neither of you knows. The gift is the anticipation.
7. Write a letter by hand
A letter takes a few days. In return, they can hold it and read it again. Send it early enough.
8. Watch a film together
Start the film at the same moment and stay connected on a call. Commentary is very much allowed.
9. Send a gift that arrives on time
Parcels arrive too early, too late or end up with the neighbours. A digital gift arrives exactly when you want it to.
At Tadawink you can, for example, choose a rose, write a card and add your voice or a handwritten note if you like. Then you set the day, the time and the birthday person's time zone, up to 30 days ahead. Before the moment, the link shows a countdown. On the birthday, the gift opens.
What matters most
It's not about the biggest gesture. It's about them feeling that you thought of them, and in good time.
