Forgot someone's birthday? What to do now

It's evening. You scroll through your messages and there it is: your best friend's birthday was yesterday. No call, no text, nothing.

It happens to almost everyone. In a 2012 survey by the German dating site Parship, 11 percent said they had forgotten their partner's birthday at least once. For anniversaries it was 33 percent. The numbers are old and come from a dating company. But they make one thing clear: you are not the only one.

What matters now is not how it happened. It's what you do next.

1. Reach out today, not tomorrow

Every day of silence makes it harder. Don't wait for the perfect moment or the perfect gift. An honest message today beats a big gesture next week.

2. Apologise briefly, without excuses

Long explanations quickly sound like justifications. Say what happened and say you're sorry. That's enough.

For example:

I missed your birthday and I'm kicking myself. You matter to me. Happy belated birthday!

Or with a little humour, if you know each other well:

My calendar and I had a fight yesterday. You lost, and I'm sorry. Happy belated birthday!

3. Show that you're thinking of them

An apology says: I forgot. A small gesture says: I'm thinking of you now. Together they work.

It doesn't need to be expensive. What counts is that it's personal:

  • Your voice. A short voice message often feels warmer than text. Find out why in our article on birthday voice messages.
  • A plan together. Invite them for dinner or coffee. Suggest a date right away.
  • A small gift with a message. Something that arrives today. A digital gift with your own card takes a few minutes to send.

4. Don't make it a big deal

Apologising again and again makes the mistake bigger than it is. Once they've accepted your apology, let it go. Celebrate their birthday with them, even if it was a few days ago.

How to never miss a birthday again

Start simple: put birthdays where you look every day.

  • Your phone calendar. Create a yearly event with two reminders: one a week before and one the day before. A week is enough for a gift, the day before for the message.
  • Your contacts. Many address books have a birthday field. Your calendar often shows it automatically.
  • A monthly check. Take five minutes at the start of each month to see who has a birthday coming up.

But a reminder only helps if you have time on the day. And that day you might be on a plane, in an exam, or simply exhausted.

Set it up today, arrive right on time

That's why Tadawink lets you set up a gift in advance. You choose the day and time, up to 30 days ahead. It arrives right on time, in the birthday person's time zone. You can still change the time until 15 minutes before.

So if you already know today: set up the gift now and forget about it with a clear conscience. And if today is too late, send it right away. Meant sincerely, it still lands well.
